ELCA Global Links - July 2011

JULY 2011

South Sudan:  Pray for a new nation
Every Friday from now until July 9, we ask for prayers as South Sudan prepares to become an independent nation. See www.elca.org/Our-Faith-In-Action/Justice/Advocacy/Issues/Peace-and-Conflict/Africa/Sudan.aspx.

Zam Zam:  Anniversary of a missionary odyssey

This spring marked the 70th anniversary of an incredible episode from World War II. An old Egyptian passenger liner called the Zam Zam carried 140 American missionaries and their families from 20 denominations bound for mission work in Africa. A Nazi warship mistakenly sunk it off the coast of South Africa. All of the passengers abandoned ship. See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BHFrX3nwF0U.

Disaster response:  Your church at work around the world
+ Malawi: In the region of Karonga heavy rains have led to flooding and a broken dike, disrupting crops and leaving hundreds of houses destroyed or damaged.
+ Colombia: After the worst flooding in 60 years, much of the country is underwater. As the rains continue the situation worsens. Find these stories and more at http://blogs.elca.org/disasterresponse/.

Japan:  Veterans help former foes
Two World War II veterans are now "firing" generous amounts of dollars at Japan to help survivors of the disastrous earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan and the Pacific Rim on March 11, 2011. Read more at www.livinglutheran.com/stories/veterans-help-former-foe.html.

Liberia:  Witnessing miracles

At age 73 Edna Johnson wanted one more great adventure in life. Following a 28-year career as a nursing instructor, Edna became a volunteer missionary for the ELCA and moved to Liberia. There she has been a witness to miracles. See www.livinglutheran.com/stories/witnessing-miracles-in-liberia.html.

Ethiopia and Washington, D.C.:  Living and breathing God's presence
Fifteen-year-old Milkom and approximately 250 others from the Oromia region of Ethiopia have found community and a spiritual oasis at one of 24 Oromo-speaking ELCA congregations in the United States. See www.livinglutheran.com/stories/living-and-breathing-gods-presence.html.

El Salvador:  English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher sought
Serve as a volunteer at the Colegio Luterano Salvadoreno in San Salvador, El Salvador.  The work assignment would include ESL classroom teaching (grades K-9) and working with administration to improve communications with sister churches and schools in the United States and other countries. See www.elca.org/globalserve and click "Global Service Opportunities" to search the database.

Ghana:  Thank you for your support
The Rev. Viking and Marissa Dietrich, missionaries in Ghana, reflect on the importance of missionary sponsorship as they complete their service.  See http://blogs.elca.org/handinhand/.

Zambia:  Pastor, if you want to help our church, you'll kneel!
An ELCA missionary in Zambia, The Rev. Arden Strasser reflects on how culture and Christianity intersect in this emerging African church.  Read more at www.elca.org/handinhand; click either the copy-ready bulletin insert or the Hand in Hand newsletter, Spring 2011.
