LWR President John Nunes to Lead Bible study at ELCA Churchwide Assembly

Baltimore, August 18, 2009 - Lutheran World Relief president, the Rev. John A. Nunes, will lead a Bible study on Saturday, August 22 as a part of the Churchwide Assembly of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA).

The study, which will take place at the beginning of the 8 a.m. plenary session on Saturday, August 22, will be streamed live on the ELCA Website at elca.org/livevideo.

“LWR’s partnership with the ELCA is such a blessing. I look forward to this opportunity to reflect on our common work in international relief and development--work that has meant so much to so many around the world,” says Nunes.

The biennial assembly will take place from August 17-23 at the Minneapolis Convention Center in Minnesota, bringing together 1,045 voting members from 65 synods. Bible studies will open several plenary sessions and will focus on the assembly theme, “God’s work. Our hands.” Nunes’ Bible study will reflect on Ecclesiastes 9:10, “Whatever your hands find to do, do it with all your might.”

In addition to the live Webcast, all assembly sessions, including plenary sessions and Bible studies, will be available for viewing at the ELCA’s Website, elca.org/assembly, where video and photo highlights will be posted daily.

Nunes has served as president of Lutheran World Relief since July 2007. He earned a Master of Theology degree from the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago in 2006. He received a BA from Concordia College, Ann Arbor, Michigan; a Master of Divinity from Concordia Seminary in St. Catharine’s, ON, Canada; and an honorary Doctorate from Concordia University, Ann Arbor, Michigan. He is currently a Ph.D. candidate at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago.
